A word from the Mythic Americas creator.
Nelson Martinez
Mythic Americas is really a 12-year old’s dream, somehow come to life 40 years later. It was when I was 12, and had migrated with my family to New Jersey from Venezuela in 1978, that I realized how much I missed the stories my grandmother used to tell me about saints, ghosts, miracles, terrifying banshees like La Lorrona, blessed-beings like Maria Lionza, and magic users and spells; specially curses, which she was always guarding against, or the blessings she got placed on her, her friends, house, and family, by a local “brujo” I don’t remember ever meeting. It was here in the US that I realized I had fallen in love with the mythologies, and mysteries of my native lands, especially all of those stories about magic my grandmother told me about. My grandma was of indigenous descent (I later found out about 40% of that heritage runs through my veins!)
In all of the years since, I have surrounded myself in whichever way I could, with as much of the lore, mythology and histories of my native lands. It is this personal history which has been the driving force behind Mythic Americas. Mythology and history are two subject matters I am extremely passionate about. Mythic Americas seeks to bring those two passions together with my third creative passion-miniatures gaming; especially table top fantasy games, such as Warlords of Erehwon-written by none other than the grand master of tabletop game design- Monsieur Rick Priestley.
My goal with this game, the worlds that are the foundation of it, and our upcoming novels and content are simple: To be one of your favorite table-top games, while offering a glimpse into the wonders and marvels of the various Native American cultures which have called the entire Western Hemisphere home for thousands of years. Perhaps in doing so, many more (as I did so many decades ago) will fall in love with the history and mythology of the Americas.
Admittedly, all I or anyone can do in a book (or a large collection of books and games) such as these is to show you an infinitesimally small glimpse of an almost incomprehensively large universe, created by and lived with (to this day) by the ancient cultures which have called the Americas home for thousands of years.
It is important to note that Mythic Americas is inspired and influenced by the mythologies of various cultures in the Americas, and my own personal experiences living in of some those cultures, but it is by no means a history of the mythos, peoples or religions of the Americas. Furthermore, Mythic Americas has been written around its own fictional foundation and in no way seeks to present itself as anything more than a work of fiction. The Mythic Americas book and the other publications around Mythic Americas will always look to the mythos of the Americas with nothing but deference, awe and total respect.
I can share with you my strong opinion, that as of the date I write this short introduction, May 1st 2020, it is crucial that as many people around the world begin to learn and discover the teachings that have been passed through the centuries to the descendants of today’s Native American Cultures. Modern societies can learn a great deal from Native American societies, but only if we seek such knowledge with the respect and admiration those cultures and its peoples deserve.
